"All Natural" products that contain substances from plants may be more at risk for bacteria and must be properly preserved.

A preservative is essentially a chemical agent that will destroy microorganisms or prevent their growth. It is very important that cosmetic products are protected by an effective preservative system to ensure safety and sufficient shelf life.

Preservative ingredients serve the very important role of preventing bacteria and fungus from growing in the product.

In recent years, synthetic preservatives have come under scientific and regulatory scrutiny, and in large part for good reason. However, I think it is important to say that most naturally-based preservatives in and of themselves, are not yet sufficient to preserve safely for a long period of time. A truly natural broad spectrum preservative is not currently available. Though natural alternatives derived from botanicals are currently being explored by researchers and are in the process of being tested and developed.

Natural preservatives tend to have a shorter shelf life than the commercial, chemically preserved products. Many of the mass-produced preservatives can be toxic to both you and the environment. However, having said that, there are synthetic preservatives available that when used carefully and conscientiously in low doses are both safe and effective.

At Ancient Wisdom we use a combination of naturally-based and synthetic preservatives. Our naturally-based ingredients include Grapefruit seed extract, essential oils and Vitamin E, and some food-grade preservatives such as potassium sorbate and citric acid in our products. We use only a miniscule amount of synthetic preservative to ensure a safe and quality product. Use of these ingredients is well below the level which the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) considers safe.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel consists of scientists, doctors and other relative experts. These members review and assess the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open, unbiased, and expert manner.

Please read the ingredients on product labels before you purchase. There are many ingredients commonly found in our food, cosmetics and cleaning products that are toxic to us and our environment.
